7) Introduction to GPS receivers

There are several components to a GPS receiver. Firstly, there is the antenna to pick up the signal from the GPS satellites. Then, there is the analog section of the receiver whose purpose is to convert the signal from the antenna into a digital format, a sequence of 0's and 1's. The third component is the digital processor which analyzes the digital signal to compute the receiver's position, velocity and time. The fourth component is the maps database and the display. The maps database and the display are used by the receiver unit to display the information analyzed in the digital processor.
